This chardonnay is one of the better finds for under $20. Fruity smell and taste, with a crisp dry finish that lingers on the palette. Perfect for an afternoon drink or over a meal.

Perhaps I'm a little off the mainstream...for I seek the standalone quintessential "Hunter Valley" style of Chardy that prevailed some 15 to 20 years ago...complex, integrated - but reasonably sweet - oak, slightly malolactic (but not buttery) with a full mouthfeel, and long long finish. In short this Evans & Tate wine definitely isn't what I was looking for. After two tastings (without food) ...after a fresh spritzy initial taste....nothing! If anything...bitter oak. After two tastings a day apart I was ready to can this wine ....UNTIL... garlic prawns and then Pad Thai! They say "wine is best enjoyed with food" well this wine (which co-incidentally arrived with a 2014 label completely different to that shown on DM's site) absolutely shone with food. I guess because of it's lack of complexity and austere nature, it formed the perfect foil for the flavours of the foods I was consuming. So...a BIG PLUS for the Metricup Road wine of Evans and Tate if accompanying with food, otherwise ...don't bother! ;^)
