Pleasantly surprised by this wine; typical MR Chardonnay but without the strong kerosine smell! Enjoyed very much!

Woodlands Chardonnay 2011 - tasted 27.7.12 Woodlands is one of Margaret Rivers oldest wineries, with vines dating back to the early 1970's. The vineyard is tended by hand using organic farming principles. This chardonnay is an entry level offerring from the Woodlands portfolio. It's packed with all the usual chardonnay characteristics, but it's the execution that makes it special. A hint of oak and farmyard on the nose, followed by a nicely weighted palette of grapefruit and white stonefruit flavours. The oak is beautifully balanced and integrated, giving a silky smooth texture. Nice length and acid on the finish. Tasted with chicken schnitzel and eggplant salad. Would match beautifully with calamari, schnapper or other strong flavoured fish dishes. Hint - Don't over chill. Can't wait to try the $64 "Chloe" !

The nose suggests classy new-style Aussie Chardonnay: fruit that isn’t over-ripe, and oak that’s happy to play a supporting role. There’s an almost Riesling-like intensity of fruit on the mid palate that suggests sweetness, followed by a fairly abrupt change to pretty acid finish. All the elements here suggest class so I think they’re still coming together, and will work better in another year or three. The price is a little on the high side
