This was nice, but it's nothing particularly special. I thought it was just a slightly smoother Añejo Especial

It's nice, a bit plain actually. Very smooth, wonderful on the nose.

After doing just under a 3wk trip to Cuba we were given a complementary bottle of the 3yr Havana Rum. My wife normally doesn't drink rum but each afternoon we had happy hour & quite enjoyed the flavour of the rum. We then tried the Havana 7yr old and the flavour was amazing, now normally I drink Bacardi 8 & the Havana Club 7 was in my opinion ahead of the Bacardi. I had also tried the 15yr old & it was even more amazing but the price was up there on the older bottle, obviously for a reason. In summary I can definitely recommend the Havana Club 7 which is the genuine Cuban Rum, I give it a 9 out of 10.

The summary says it all. If you've ever enjoyed the subtle smoke of a highland single malt and have been curious about trying a decent rum without spending too much, this is the one to go for. The oak and leathery tobacco notes other reviewers have mentioned work beautifully with the trademark Havana vanilla notes, to create a very balanced rum ideal for sipping neat. It's got smoother flavour than the Especial, and at $60 is better value than the Maestros or similarly dry 12yo Santiago De Cuba imo. For a sweet summer spirit Diplomatico or Zacapa are still my staples, but if you like your rums dry and easy on the wallet you cannot beat this. I wish I could give it 6 stars for value for money. This is not dissimilar to the Especial , not as bold on the nose and more rounded in the flavours. Neat it would be a strong step up. It is a smoother drink but a little less up front on the toffee/molasses than the Especial. Id rate it equal as a mixer depending on personal preferences and superior neat. Lovely Cuban rum.

The nose has the robust sweetness of raisins and prunes with an ever present background of tobacco. Tasting adds date like sweetness and leathery tobacco to the already present raisin and prune. Finish is quite smoky with some oak notes both staying long in the back of the throat.
