A Great Wine

I would recommend this to a friend!
V. 2004. 20 years old, has been in the cellar for nearly that time. The cork crumbled on opening, not looking good, so filtered out the cork and the heavy sediment - a coffee filter did the job. Once filtered, a deep dark red colour, rich smooth fruit, rather dense but a great fruit flavour, faintly fruit sweet, not savoury at all. Definitely worth the money.

Grange or Hill Of Grace?
After trying the same vintage of both, I would choose the Hill Of Grace. Out of the bottle, the Grange had a good nose, full of berry and fruit, however required serious filtering. The sediment was thick and dark and the filter had to be cleaned twice to pass the bottle whilst decanting. The colour was good, but thinned a little as the wine opened up.
On the taste, the peppery finish one expects from a Shiraz was absent.... with a short and fine finish. Very slight hint of cork too.
To summarise - if you like a good spicy/peppery shiraz, choose Hill Of Grace.

Shiraz
Penfolds Grange has earned a reputation for bold flavours and a concentrated palate. This particular variety doesn't let the side down, delivering plenty of complexity and a real depth that'll satisfy with every sip. A great choice of dry red for maturing.
