How can we help?
Afterpay
What is Afterpay?
Afterpay is a Buy Now, Pay Later payment option that lets you split your purchase into four interest-free instalments over 6-8 weeks.
You can use Afterpay when shopping in-store by tapping your Afterpay Card via Apple Pay or Google Pay, or online by selecting Afterpay at checkout.
How does Afterpay work at BWS?
Online
- Add your items to your cart
- Select Afterpay as your payment method at checkout
- You'll be redirected to log into or create an Afterpay account
- Your payment schedule will be displayed
- That's it! Your purchase will be split into four payments
In-store
- Download the Afterpay app
- Set up your Afterpay Card by following the prompts to add it to your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet
- Check your available spend, and when you're ready to pay, activate the Afterpay Card in the Afterpay app and pay using Apple Pay or Google Pay
Important things to know
- Afterpay is available for online orders between $1 and $4,000 (including any applicable delivery costs). Maximum spend is subject to individual limits and your current pending Afterpay balance
- Afterpay is accepted at most BWS stores, except for locations in NT and NWWA
- All usual ID checks and responsible service of alcohol (RSA) requirements still apply. Afterpay is simply another payment option
- Late fees, eligibility criteria and T&Cs apply. Afterpay Australia Pty Ltd ABN 15 169 342 947, Australian Credit Licence 527911
How does the payment schedule work?
You may be required to make your first payment at the time of purchase, with the remaining three payments deducted every two weeks from your chosen payment method. If you'd like to make additional payments before your scheduled pay dates, you can do so through your Afterpay account.
Are there any fees for using Afterpay?
There are no fees or interest when you pay on time. However, if you miss a payment, Afterpay will charge a capped late fee starting at $10, which will never exceed 25% of the purchase price or $68 (whichever is less).
Afterpay will send reminders before each payment due date and an alert if a payment fails. For more information, see Afterpay's Terms of Service.
Why does BWS offer Afterpay?
From June 2025, new regulations were introduced to make Buy Now, Pay Later services safer and more transparent. These include responsible lending rules, credit checks, and hardship support. With these safeguards in place, Afterpay provides a secure and regulated payment option for our customers.
To set up an Afterpay account, you'll need to:
- Live in Australia or New Zealand
- Be over 18 years of age
- Have an Australian or New Zealand debit or credit card
- Have a valid and verifiable email address and mobile number
- Be capable of entering into a legally binding contract
Credit checks apply. View full Afterpay terms and conditions.
How are refunds handled?
Refunds are processed the same way as any card payment.
In-store: Tap your Afterpay Card at the register, and your repayment schedule will update automatically in the Afterpay app.
Online: Refunds will be processed in line with our standard returns policy. Afterpay will be notified of your return and will process the appropriate refund. Please do not return your purchase directly to Afterpay.
If you believe there is a fault or concern with your Afterpay payment, please visit the Afterpay Customer Help Centre or get in touch via the Help section in the Afterpay app.
What happens if a payment is declined?
The most common reason is insufficient funds in your linked account. If this happens:
- You'll receive a text message from Afterpay
- You'll need to contact Afterpay directly through the app for help
For in-store purchases, another reason may be that the particular store's payment terminal doesn't support Afterpay. If so, you'll see this message:
"Alert: Afterpay is currently not available at this store. Visit the app to find participating stores."
You can use the Afterpay app to find nearby stores that accept it.
