What type of wine is Shiraz?

Shiraz (or syrah) is a dark-skinned grape that produces medium to full-bodied bold red wines. Syrah originated in France before travelling to Australia where it became known as shiraz.

The famous Australian shiraz is bolder and more robust than syrah. When you think of the Australian Shiraz, the flavour notes are dark fruits like blackberries, blueberries, and plums, with some subtle spicy black pepper. Many of these shiraz wines have great aging potential.

Which Australian wine regions make the best shiraz?

Clare Valley:
This renowned wine-producing region is in Southern Australia. This shiraz has flavours of dark berries, black cherries and plums, with the subtle spiciness of black pepper and even hints of eucalyptus.
Barossa Valley:
The Barossa Valley is said to be the shiraz capital of the world with decades-old vineyards, with some sites cultivating vines for over a century now. A classic Barossa shiraz is full-bodied, with a high level of tannins and flavours that include notes of blackberry, dark fruit, blueberry and black cherry.
