4 bar cart staples

Ok, so you’ve thrifted a bar cart from FB Marketplace and just gotten over how dodgy the guy was. What’s next? How about stocking it with some staple spirits and having a lil bank of drinks to make at home. Here’s four essential bottles to start you off.

Vodka

There’s a reason this humble spirit is first on the list. Distilled from everyone’s fave veggie (potato) a bit of voddy can go a really REALLY long way. The subtle flavour and smooth finish makes it a great base for so many iconic cocky-t’s.

Mix it with orange juice for a Screwdriver, get sophisticated with a Martini, or go a lil bit fruity with a Cosmo. You can even cook with it… granted, vodka pasta is very 2020. Our recc is Smirnoff’s Red Vodka: classic, good value and goes well in a stack of drinks.

Rum

Did you know rum is actually made from sugar cane? Neither did we (pls don’t tell our boss).

The sweetness in rums like Bundaberg Underproof make it perf in tropical cocktails, like a Mojito or Dark & Stormy. You could even go to the next level and chuck it in a hot choccy for an adult version of a classic drink. (Marshmallows are a must.)

Spiced Rum

Ah yes, spiced rum (don’t worry, it’s not THAT spicy). Tracing back to the 16th century, pirates used to make their crummy rummy taste good by adding spices to it… hence names like Captain Morgan Spiced Gold Rum

If you like a cinnamon-clovey twist to your drinks, you’re in luck. Chuck it in any rum-based cocktails like a Daiquiri or Pina Colada to ~ add a little bit of spice ~ It also works well in pineapple juice or a Moscow Mule. Serve as a quick and easy pre-dinner tipple - trust us, it’s a vibe.

Whiskey

Smooth, smokey, sip-worthy… and surprisingly versatile. When it comes to whiskey, you’ve got the option of a single malt scotch or blend.  We recommend sticking to a bottle like Johnnie Walker Red Label as it’s a solid base for heaps ofdelish cocktails.

For a drink that gives moody jazz bar vibes, whip up a scotch high-ball. Or if you’re feeling a bit fancy, how about an old fashioned? If you’re incred lazy (like me), mix with a bitta apple juice for the best whiskey cocktail you’ll ever have(imho).
