1
Lager
If you've ever enjoyed a German beer, you've enjoyed a lager. They're the goldilocks of the beer world - not too heavy, not too light, just right. Classics like VB, Carlton Draught, and Heineken all fall into this category. The average alcohol content is usually between 4% and 5% ABV.
2
PALE ALE
These bad boys have helped turbocharge the craft beer revolution. Hops play a key role in the beer’s flavour profile, bringing tropical fruit notes and gentle bitterness. A good pale ale should be sessionable and refreshing, with average alcohol between 4% and 5% ABV. You’ll often see beers labelled Australian Pale Ale or American Pale Ale.
3
XPA
Now, if you're looking to branch out from pale ale, an extra pale ale (XPA) might be just what you need. It sits somewhere in between pale ale and big, full-flavoured IPA. The flavours are a little bit stronger, but not overpowering. The average alcohol content sits between 4.5% and 5.5% ABV.
4
IPA
And speaking of big, full-flavoured IPAs, let's talk about them now. Indian Pale Ale is like the wine of the beer world. Brewers are constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to flavour. The name comes from the idea that regular ales had to have more hops added to fortify them on the long sea journey to India. If you love big, bitter hop flavours, this is the beer for you. The average alcohol content is usually between 5.5% and 6.5% ABV.
5
STOUT & PORTERS
Stouts and porters are almost like a liquid meal. Made from dark roasted malts, they have a distinctive dark colour and delicious roasted malt flavours. There’s a dazzling array of different styles to try, including sweet/milk stout, Irish (or dry stout), imperial stout, export stout and more. Not for the fainthearted, you’ll typically find hefty ABV levels between 5% and 8%
6
PILSENERS
Last but not least, we have pilseners. They're a style of lager, but with more hops added to give it a distinctive bitter kick. Like lagers, they're refreshing and sessionable. Popular brands include Reschs, Oettinger and Pilsner Urquell. You’ll find great examples from breweries in Australia, Germany and the Czech Republic. So next time the sun is shining and you’re after something nice and crisp, give a pilsener a go. The average alcohol content is usually between 4.5% and 5.5% ABV.
So there you have it, a quick overview of some of the main beer styles you’ll encounter on your journey. Now get out there and try them all! Cheers!
