Longhop Shiraz 2011 - Tasted 30/06/2012 This wine comes from the controversial 2011 vintage, and is clear evidence that this vintage is not to be written off. The colour is dense purple, as you would expect for such a young wine. The nose is subtle, but alluringly complex. Slightly dusty with hints of violets, licorice and aniseed. The palette is medium bodied, showing red berry fruits, and extra soft tannins. On first tasting this wine appeared a little lean and short, but with time and the addition of food, it really started to sing. I paired it with homemade meat pie, but it would match beautifully with other subtly flavoured meat dishes such as lamb chops or lamb roast. This is not a wine for lovers of big Barossa Shiraz, but if you prefer gentle, elegant wines then this is worth a look. A great effort from a difficult vintage.
