pleasant enough ... but lacking typicity

2023 vintage: medium-bodied with quite fresh acidity, a floral and quinine palate, and quite a long finish; the main issue is the absence of the Gruner Veltliner's signature white pepper flavour.

I'm writing this review more in response to Lyn C's comment. She claimed it was "trying to be European" and "acidic to boot". Well, Lyn, I'm not sure if you're getting confused with another variety, but the Gruner Veltliner is known for its acidity. The cooler climate of Austria is what contributes to this pronounced acidity. With our southern hemisphere example here, it too has been grown in a cooler climate, therefore exhibiting similar acidity to its Austrian counterpart.
The main difference, in my humble opinion, is more in the flavour profile; the Remarkables example is probably learning more towards a stone fruit dominance with less minerality. This is compared to an Austrian GV, which is likely to be more green appley, citrusy, with a hint of white pepper. Overall, the Remarkables version is a fine example of a GV. Think of it as an exotic Sauvignon Blanc - and take from that what you will :)

Located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables mountain range lives up to its name by rising sharply to create an impressive backdrop for the surrounding waters. This finely textured wine lives up to its namesake.A complex nose showing aromas of stonefruit, spices and dried herbs. The palate is bright and refreshing with notes of lemon, pear and spice and a long finish.
