A little musty and flat on the nose (and similar on the palate), with dark berries. However, the palate is dry and not fruit forward, except perhaps a hint of red currant if I try really hard. On the palate, smoke, chalky, anise, pungent chemical and candy apple toffee. Not an easy wine to pair. I had it with an eye fillet and it wasn't a great match. I've just had it with grass fed oiled, salted and herbed pan fried lamb cutlets and it pairs much better. What also helped is that it's been in a small decanting vessel overnight glad wrapped in the fridge. It's very intense, unbalanced and confusing to the palate. It reminds me of a Northern Italian wine like Valpolicella. Not great alone or straight after opening, but can be matched with lamb, for example, with a little patience for it to develop in a decanter.
