Very good entry peat

Teeling generally makes decent smooth whiskies. This one is no exception, but with a hit of peat. It's much thicker in body than most teeling whiskies and not the most complex one, but it's a good one.

Teeling source their peat from the Scottish Lowlands and use triple distillation to reduce the medicinal attribute of the peat. The result is a nose which reflects the ex-sauternes notes (baked orchard fruits) slightly more than the peat, and a palate of mild peat, not unlike Scottish Highland or Speyside peated whiskies (think Benriach, Benromach peated) combined with an unobtrusive, well-made sweetness. You must focus to find the ex-bourbon influence. Somewhat oily mouthfeel, little or no afterburn, good heating properties, easy to drink straight. The Blackpitts is not as peat-strong as the best Islay whiskies but definitely NOT ash-like. If you haven’t accepted peated whiskeys/ies yet, then it’s pointless writing a review. Whisky Advocate rated it 3rd in 2021 and I agree. This is an excellent whiskey and I only give it 4 stars because I have a habit of comparing to the more heavily peated Islay whiskies.

Product Details

An inviting nose where barbeque smoke and cloves are intermingled with fresh notes of butterscotch and orange peel. On the pallet a fascinating blend of Applewood smoke, honey and all spice are married with stewed pears and fresh grilled pineapple. This whiskey finishes with the return of a savoury smoke over a lingering wood undertone, which combines delightfully with notes of salted caramel.
